FAMILY TREE JOURNAL BASICS
The Function keys displayed at the bottom of the screens
allow you to select the other functions.
MAIN MENU FUNCTION KEYS
F1 - HELP - This key is available on most screens to guide you.
You may want to print all of the files with the extension ".HLP"
(PRINT *.HLP) to have a hard copy of the help screens.
F2 - DATA - enter or change genealogical information.
F3 - PRINT - print reports, charts, and books.
F4 - MISC - a collection of other functions.
F5 - ADDR - an address book for family members.
F6 - EDITOR - text editor for biographies, reference notes and
other files.
F9 - SETUP - information specific to your configuration.
You make your selections by clicking the function key description
at the bottom of the screen or by pressing the key indicated.
GENERAL DATA ENTRY
Data fields may be selected using the <ARROW> keys or
clicking on the appropriate field. Some screens will scroll in-
formation using the <ARROW>, <HOME>, <END>, <PgUP> or <PgDn>
keys. You may also scroll those screens by clicking on the arrow
characters. Other screens allow you to click on the screen to
make a selection, for instance, you may click a file name from
those listed at the top of the SETUP screen and that file will
become the new base file name. To exit from most operations you
may press the F10 or <ESC> key or move the mouse to the upper-
left corner of the screen and click.
USING A MOUSE
You must have the MS-DOS mouse driver installed for the
mouse to function with this program even if you are running
Family Tree Journal from Windows.
GETTING HELP
Customers with modems may download the latest version of
FAMILY TREE JOURNAL (and other genealogical software) and upload
and download genealogical data and related information by using a
communications program such as Procomm and dialing 614-868-9039
to access the FAMILY TREE JOURNAL bulletin board.
The "look" of the board is subject to change as new fea-
tures are added and modified. The board currently will accept
300, 1200, 2400, 9600, 14,400, and 28,800 baud, 8 bits, no
parity, and 1 stop bit. When you call the board the first time,
you will have to go through the registration routines.
Many customers have provided a list of surnames for which
they have and/or need information. You may search for surnames
and display the address of the submitter. Some customers have
also sent copies of data files that they have created with FAMILY
TREE JOURNAL. You may search the name lists of these files and
download copies of the entire set of files if you find a name or
group of names that could assist you in your research.
SHAREWARE
The concept of shareware parallels the nature of geneal-
ogy and, I feel, is an appropriate method of distribution for
FAMILY TREE JOURNAL. For those of you not familiar with
shareware, here is how it works:
You are allowed to use FAMILY TREE JOURNAL and encouraged
to make copies of the program and distribute those copies to
anyone (as long as you don't modify the program or remove the
copyright notice). You may distribute these copies in any manner
you wish either directly or electronically. If you distribute
FAMILY TREE JOURNAL to relatives, I suggest that you also include
a subgroup of your data files appropriate for that person. If you
have received a copy and, after using the program, you feel that
it is worthwhile, you are requested to send a registration fee of
$35 to Cherry Tree Software. In return, you will receive a copy
of the latest version of FAMILY TREE JOURNAL, a complete in-
struction manual, and you will be notified of periodic updates to
the program.
COMPUTER VIRUSES
I worked almost 33 years for a company the controls what
was once called "The world's largest computer - the telephone
switching system". My hobby and my business involve computers. I
own more than dozen computers myself. In my lifetime of 50+ years
meeting people, many of whom have and use computers, I have not
known anyone who has been struck by lightning nor have I actually
experienced a computer virus with any friends or acquaintances
who use computers. I have, however, known three individuals who
have hit the Ohio lottery for amounts between 8 and 26 million
dollars as well as several members of a group that split 16
million. My experience tells me that the odds of winning the
lottery are much better than either being hit by lightning or
getting a computer virus! This will probably generate a whole lot
of mail from people who have been hit by lightning and maybe from
a few who have had a computer virus, but I only count those that
I knew before they beat the odds!
To order your registered copy of FAMILY TREE JOURNAL,
please send a check, credit card information (Visa or
MasterCard), or money order for $35 to the address below. To
avoid errors, a file called "REGISTER.DOC" is included that you
may print and use as a registration form. Please use this form,
especially if you are paying by credit card.
Technical support by FAX or mail for the majority of
problems that you may encounter has not proven effective because
of the need for us to work together with the program using your
particular system configuration. The only way that this can be
accomplished is by telephone and I don't expect you to wait
patiently in front of your computer for a phone call after you
have dropped a letter into the mail. If you find that you are
experiencing problems that are not covered in the documentation,
please feel free to call from a phone near your computer. If you
get a recording when you call, please try again at another time.
I normally do not return calls because I have found that the
calls will seldom occur at a time convenient for you to work with
your system and the program.

I hope you enjoy using FAMILY TREE JOURNAL and I welcome
your comments and suggestions.
I'm not sure why we seek out our ancestors. Maybe we hope
to find that we are heirs to a lost fortune. Maybe we would like
to brag about some famous (or infamous) ancestor. Maybe we just
long for a simpler life that our ancestors must have experienced
or imagine that we could share our technology with them in some
way. Maybe we just don't feel complete without knowing how we
came to be who we are. I didn't mean to get too philosophical
about this thing, to me it's just fun to try to work puzzles and
fit as many pieces into place as possible.
